Throughout this entire experience, I learned lots about Google and how the company runs. I didn't realize that Google mad most of it's net profits through ads and Google Adwords. One thing that also really surprised me was that one of the most popular sites, Youtube, was causing Google to lose about 1.6 million dollars per day. I thought that Youtube would bring in lots of revenue. Overall, I liked this project because I have always had an interest in Google, since they have grown fast and has lots of useful services. Lots of the information was new to me and some of it was not. I still enjoyed getting to write about Google and looking at their old sites in the internet archives. It's hard to believe that 10 years ago, Google was just a project created by some university students that would happen to evolve into one of the largest companies around. All of this growth has caused Google to become a "threat" to other companies such as Yahoo and ASK. Google's range of services also affect other companies, such as Google 411. Google 411 is free and is almost the same as 411 offered by your phone company. Usually the phone companies charge you ~$1 to use 411. This could cause the phone companies to lose lots of profit. Google Earth and Google Maps is taking away money from the companies who sell maps on paper, though this could cause printers and ink/toner sales to rise. Google has become a threat to many companies. If Google keeps growing and adding more services, they could potentially "overthrow" all of the companies that provide similar services. In my opinion, I don't believe that Google is anything to worry about. It would be dangerous for the economy to have 1 large company, but I don't think that Google will grow big enough to "overthrow"all the competitors.
The 3 Tools
The 3 tools used to help keep this project organized was Wikispaces, Delicious, and Blogger. This tools were easy to use and were usually helpful in keeping organized. I found Delicious to be very helpful because as I was creating bookmarks, delicious showed me links related to my tags which allowed me to find more information easily. Using the Wikispace was also very easy. It was a matter of creating pages and editing them. I found it really easy to use. The final tool, Blogger, I found to be very easy to use, but I did not find it very useful. I use blogger to keep a journal, which allowed me to think back to what I did, but didn't really help on the development of the project. Overall, these tools were very helpful and when combined, created a very organized system for storing and saving information.
